Tense can be historically traced back to the old French empire with a word call ‘ten’ I.e it means time, so to know tenses I will like you to have this at the back of your mind that it ordinarily means “when the Acton are done”.

Tense could be said to be as an English language instrument use in figuring out different time actions are carried out through human usages of words.

It is the use of appropriate tense in a word that will help every listener to get what a speaker is trying to convey, and tense makes English appropriate a lot, through tense we can get the appropriate time things are done and when actions are carried out. It is important to note that the verb in a sentence is affected by the tense, since verb is an avenue where tense is expressed, time could be fundamentally divided into three stance which are:

  • Present
  • Past
  • Future
  1. The simple present: it takes the verb in actual form.
Example sentence
  •  animal lives in the forest
  • A snake hisses
  • As I press the button, the gate automatically opens
  • Here comes the winning goal
  • Okocha passes the ball to KANU and KANU passes it into an empty net and the audience shout it is a goal

2.  The present continuous: (progressive)

This is the kind of ing-thing in tense, it shows something happening at that particular time I.e a continuous process has started but still happening
  • The boy is playing ball
  • My mother is cooking
  • My father is washing the car
  • My cousin is waiting for the result
  • The student are complaining
3.  The present perfect: this indicate that a past action has some linkage with the present ones, it may be that the consequence or result of the past action is still obvious. To have a present perfect tense, the subordinative verb must be in a present form and the main verb should be in past form.
  • I have declared why am going to do
  • The floor manager has gone home
  • The police officer have arrive to the student
